Phylicia + Melvin: A New York Girl and a Georgia Boy love story! We recently spent some time in Downtown Charleston, SC capturing their Engagement Portraits, and these two love birds, as you’ll see, are absolutely STUNNINGLY in love with each other❤️
Have you ever just watched people the first time they pull up near you, and immediately know you’re going to love them?
They popped out the car that beautiful morning down on the corner of King and Queen streets in Charleston to begin our session, and their smiles and hugs that greeted spoke so much…these two have JOY deep within them! Joy that radiates outward into their beautifully infectious smiles and warm hugs.
We all know that most men HATE having their Portraits made and they usually give me a slightly harder time🤣, but Mel for his beloved Phylicia was an absolute breeze! She makes him laugh, and he just LIGHTS.UP! Camera in his face or not he doesn’t care to show it…he’s smitten and the world will know it.
He opens her car doors, walks on the “right”/protective outside side of the streets, even leads her with a gentle hand…Gentlemanly traits not seen too much anymore, but certainly admired by this Southern, romantic heart! He loves her so much ya’ll it’s like he just can’t.stop.smiling around her, and it was absolutely beautiful watching them together because it showed up in the smallest of seemingly insignificant ways.
Phylicia said she wanted to start at the corner of King and Queen streets because she found her King, and I think he would definitely agree he’s found his Queen; so on the opposite corners of “their” streets, just where a Queen could find her King and a King could find his Queen, we started the day!
From there we headed to the site where he popped the question…The Battery’s White Point Garden Williams Pavillion/Gazebo. The light was perfect, and the Live Oaks provided us with splendid shade for some incredibly beautiful scenic images.
Fun fact: Phylicia first messaged me noting my mix of nature and subjects in my work, and right then I actually KNEW I was going to love her😉 We live in a magnificently magical world of beautiful landscapes and scenery painted and breathed by a God who spared no detail, of which we are such a small piece, and it’s my heart’s beat to capture our tiny selves in the midst of this immense majesty…and she picked up on that immediately! Woman after my own heart❤️
We took our time strolling under the trees, twirling in front of the Gazebo, even briefly watching strange birds fight/”argue” in the trees, before we headed on down to that Downtown Charleston icon, Rainbow Row.
Ya’ll that Row of perfectly pastel painted ladies never disappoints, and mixed with Phylicia’s Lord and Taylor Floral Skirt + Mel’s pale pink button down it was a match made in fashion Heaven!
It’s always wonderful capturing love stories, and when you’ve been doing it for this long you get to see some absolutely stunning tales unfold before you as you bounce from location to location.
Mel seems to put at her at an other worldly ease when he’s close, and her smile grows even when she just looks at him and he’s not looking back…literally “the look of love is in her eyes” ya’ll, and it’s a lovely lovely sight to behold…. annnd makes this job so much more than “just taking a few pictures”.
We meandered on down a few side streets admiring the Flower Boxes that the Downtown Homeowners take extreme pride in dolling up their homes and streets with before ending our session.
I don’t just “take pictures” loves, but yet I live to capture legacies. I live for the future, not the present. These images aren’t for the here and now, no! These images are for Phylicia + Mel’s future generations! For them to see how much their mother/grandmother loved their father/grandfather, and just how much he absolutely loved and adored her! Meant to tell their story long after we’re all gone, documented in the splendid beauty of this place we call Charleston, of when a New York Girl and a Georgia Boy met, and then fell in love!
